Quirky Quick Writes

Hey! This page is for my Quirky Quick Writes!

I will be posting a short bit of writing as often as possible to hold myself accountable and stand behind my words.

My words are simply this: In order to become a better writer, you have to write.

Every time I visit a classroom and they want some help with writing, I tell them to do this very simple thing: Just write. Easier said than done! So here is the process:

  • Set a timer (3-5 minutes)
  • Get out a pencil, pen, paper, blank page, google doc, blog page, etc.
  • Find a prompt (I like this one)
  • DON’T THINK! JUST PUSH START
  • Write as many words as you can before the timer stops
  • Stop writing when the timer stops
  • Delight in your wonderful brain for delivering so many words in so little time
  • Do it again tomorrow

Prompt: Write a suspenseful story about a compassionate astronaut who meets 3 kids from another world.

Time: 5 minutes

Out in the universe, you don’t meet a lot of people. I wouldn’t mind if you did. I kinda miss people. Today is a new day, well at least I think it is. There isn’t really a night and a day out here. Just a bunch of planets and stars and black holes. Stay away from those. Whatever day it is, I should have known it would be different. It happened while I was out cleaning the windows on the old space station. Its not something you have to do very often, but when your bored, some chores seem like a good idea. I saw a streak of light out of the corner of my helmet, and it was getting closer. Time flies in space, so they say, and the light was growing and growing until it stopped just in front of our little space station. Finally, I thought to myself, excitement creeping in about to fill my whole space suit. “Finally, I was going to meet the ones from other worlds.” There was always some piece of me that believed it. What looked like a door or a window slid open and three little heads looked back at me. They weren’t green heads with black eyes. They looked just like three little kids you might see back on Earth, riding their bikes down the street. Only these three kids weren’t riding bikes, they were driving an actual space ship!
